Gail Wong’s expertise is in talent management and professional development. She is passionate about working with professionals to help them leverage their strengths and interests to achieve their career aspirations. She has over 15 years of combined experience, in various roles, in the legal and management consulting professions, and is currently a Professional Development Manager at McKinsey & Company (McKinsey). In this role, she leads the staffing and professional development (PD) of Toronto based Associates and supports a number of PD initiatives including feedback and mentoring, team kick-offs and the development, advancement and retention of women. As a thought partner to the Firm’s associate consultants and leadership, she is responsible for bringing the best of the Firm’s talent to solving the needs of the Firm’s valued clients.
Prior to McKinsey, Gail practised for 6 years (2003 to 2009) as a corporate and banking law at leading law firms in Toronto and London, England and assumed the role of Director, Professional Resources (Director) at McCarthy Tetrault LLP from 2009 to 2017. In the Director role, Gail was responsible for leading the Toronto office’s student and junior associate programs, including the office’s recruitment strategy, performance management and professional development of its summer/articling students and junior associates. She also regularly participated on panels about recruitment, the law student experience and diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. She has been interviewed by a number of media outlets including, the Legal Post, Law Times, Lexpert, Precedent Magazine and Canadian Lawyer 4Students Magazine to provide her insight on the legal recruitment market and on the summer/articling student experience.
Gail is active in the area of diversity and was a Founding Member of the Diversity Working Group (Canadian Section) of the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) in 2011 and was formerly a member of the Board of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (FACL). She currently supports women’s inclusion initiatives at McKinsey.
Gail received her Hon. Bachelor of Arts in International Relations (1999) from the University of Toronto and J.D. (2002) from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law. She is called to the Law Society of Upper Canada (2003) and Law Society of England and Wales (2008).
