Yzah Macalintal

Yzah Macalintal — Coming from male-dominated industries in mining and energy, pursuing an MBA with strong-willed women from very diverse backgrounds is an absolute privilege. The program hasn’t even started but I’ve already had incredible support from the women of the current cohort, alumni network, and my future classmates. By advancing gender diversity, together we can bring a fresh perspective in different business verticals and make a collaborative impact.

Faïza M’Ghizou

Faïza M'Ghizou — We all have a purpose in life, sometimes we just need this one person who will guide us through uncertain times to show us that taking a leap of faith will get us closer to that purpose. As a mother working in the financial industry, mentorship has helped me see that women have a unique outlook on challenges which makes us deliver outstanding results. Hence why, pursuing the Ivey MBA will allow me to join this circle of incredible women who challenge the status quo every day while making an impact in their communities.

Reilly Baggs

Reilly Baggs — Pursuing an MBA is about both personal and professional growth. Through that growth, my goal is to learn how to leverage my unique skills to contribute to meaningful causes. As future business leaders we have an inherent role as mentors to other women and as advocates for gender diversity within the business community. I am excited to be part of this group of amazing women at Ivey who will drive progress and accomplish great things!

Ena Mulalic

Ena Mulalic — I am privileged to have been a mentor and experienced the mentorship of strong women throughout my engineering career, and I feel equally lucky to be pursuing an MBA where I can continue to play a role in empowering women professionally. I hope to use the leadership skills I gain from my MBA to drive organizational change as well as have a meaningful impact on the community of women around me and future generations of leaders.

Mahak Gupta

Mahak Gupta — Dreams do come true when we’re fearless in the pursuit of what sets our soul on fire. I’ve always been captivated by the abundant opportunities in the business world. In trying to take myself to the next level, when my future entrepreneurial passions leverage my Ivey in education, I can make a positive impact in the world. I’m beyond thrilled to be a part of a program developing those types of leaders. My MBA will catalyze building my next venture on a larger scale and reaching a larger audience with my humanitarian efforts, all while improving my leadership style, elevating my business acumen and taking my network to the next level. As a National Board member of Lean in Canada and founder of a women’s mentorship program for small business owners, I’m in a unique position to empower and support women in creating opportunities that show how much of a formidable force they are in the boardroom!

Have you ever experienced imposter syndrome?

It's that voice in your head that tells you that you're not good enough, or that you don't belong, or that you're just lucky and will be exposed as a fraud. It can be especially common among high achievers, perfectionists, or people who belong to underrepresented groups.

Imposter syndrome can leave you feeling anxious, stressed, and depressed. It can also prevent you from taking risks, pursuing your goals, or enjoying your accomplishments. It's like a mental roadblock that keeps you stuck in a negative cycle of self-criticism and self-sabotage.

Sounds awful, right?

Well, here’s the good news:

You don’t need to let imposter syndrome define you. Many successful and talented people have experienced imposter syndrome, and have been able to overcome it.

Remember that seeking support from others doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human.

Whether it's from your friends, family, or a mental health professional, getting help can make a huge difference in how you feel.

It is also important to note when what you are struggling with is NOT imposter syndrome.

Marginalized groups can sometimes falsely feel they are being held back by imposter syndrome, when in fact some organizations and systems have still not created equitable environments that help them thrive and achieve their goals.

This week is Mental Health Week, a time to raise awareness and promote positive mental health for all. As a society, we still have a long way to go in destigmatizing mental illness and creating safe and supportive spaces for people to seek help.

One of the most powerful ways to reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking is to share our stories of mental illness. When we speak openly and honestly about our struggles, we help others realize that they're not alone and that it's okay to seek support.

We also challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about mental health, and show that mental illness can affect anyone, regardless of their background or status.

Sharing our stories can take many forms, from personal conversations with friends and family, to social media posts, to public speaking or advocacy. It can be scary and vulnerable to talk about our mental health, but it can also be liberating and healing. When we open up, we create opportunities for connection, empathy, and learning.

Of course, sharing our stories is not a substitute for professional help or evidence-based treatments.

If you're struggling with your mental health, please know that there are resources and supports available to you, such as therapy, medication, peer support (like your Lean In Circle!), or crisis services.

You don't have to suffer in silence or alone.

As we mark Mental Health Week, let's commit to destigmatizing mental illness and creating a more compassionate and inclusive society.

Being vulnerable is not easy. It's about showing up and being seen, even when it's uncomfortable. It's about having the courage to admit when you're wrong, to ask for help when you need it, and to share your struggles with others.

It can be scary to open up and show your true self to the world. But when you let go of the fear and embrace vulnerability, it is liberating.
