Lean In Canada:Vancouver - Roundtable Discussion: Making It Work! - Lean in Canada

The Vancouver Chapter of Lean In Canada gathered for an intimate roundtable discussion on how to navigate parental leave without sacrificing career goals. Participants shared their opinions and advice on parental leave. Here are some of the biggest takeaways:

  • Adjust your career expectations

It is OK to take smaller steps in your career while you are preparing to welcome a new baby to the family. It may seem like your colleagues who never left the workforce are achieving more than you are, but remember that this is not a race – concentrate on your and your baby’s health and pick up the pace once you return.

  • Stay in touch with your employers

Check in with your employer every once in a while. Employers will appreciate your communication and willingness to stay in touch while you are on maternity/paternity leave. Set up the expectations for communications with your team and employer during your mat leave so you can stay in touch with changes in the workplace.

  • Prepare yourself to go back

Parents might know that it takes a lot of time and work to take care of newborn children, but while you are on parental leave, try to stay on top of industry and business news, and if possible, spend some time learning new skills – this will make transition back into the workforce much easier for both you and your employer.
