Meet Our Vancouver Chapter President - Lean in Canada

Name: Florence Leung

Industry: Marketing – Principal at Catalyst Agents

Why Lean In?

I feel that the mandate of Lean In, where we create an inclusive yet diversified community to support and empower women, helps to address not just the career challenges that some groups set out to support but also life’s challenges for women. Work challenges are sometimes tied into family planning challenges and we take this into consideration when we craft our events and membership outreach.

What’s Different?

When we attend networking or industry events, we often find ourselves seeing the same faces or discussing topics with people from the same industry. Think of a time when you met someone with a background much different from you own – their story and perspectives likely brought fresh insights and fascinating conversation. This is what we hope to do for Lean In Vancouver. We want to bring together women from varying industries, backgrounds, and experiences to lift each other up – this isn’t networking, it is community building.

What Does Success Look Like?

My vision for the Vancouver Chapter is to help amazing, capable women find the purpose, courage and determination to boldly pursue their goals, whatever they may be. I consider each woman whose goals we help realize as one of many successful steps in the right direction. Success for us is when every woman in Vancouver can boldly ‘Lean In’.

Now, moving on to the lighter side of things…

What do you do to relax?

Travel. I sneak in weekend trips or week-long trips to unwind whenever I can. Seeing new places and people and experiencing new things are my ways to recharge.

Your Recommended Reads?

Originals, by Adam Grant. I am still in the process of reading this, but it is the type of thinking that new leaders need to engage in. Foster an open mind!

Tuesdays with Morrie, by Mitch Albom. This book is a nudge to remind you of the scarcity of time and how we spend it.

The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho. I can say that this book transformed my life by opening my mind to different possibilities and helped define who I want to be.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go!, by Dr.Suess. This was given to me by my mentor and is my go-to book whenever I am in a lull.
